Ashton Prime 4-0 Hawkenbury III

Saturday 26th October 2013, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Prime returned to the stewardship of Goldsmith for the visit of Hawkenbury III's to Cadogan. They were without the ankle injury-victim Buckland and the absent Excell and Cary.

Sykes and Williams came into the back 4 with Westcott replacing Excell in an attacking midfield role. Davis, Fitzgerald and Harris all returned to the bench.

Prime started well and they could have taken the lead after just 2 minutes when Henshall dribbled past several Hawks defenders but then chose not to shoot with his left foot and the chance was gone.

Nowak in his first start of the season was unlucky to have a shot saved by the keeper and then moments after he blazed high over the bar when well placed.

The breakthrough eventually came when Abu's cross from the left was not cleared by the visiting centre-backs and Ferguson was on hand to calmly slot the ball home and continue his record of scoring in every game this season.

One soon became two when Henshall's miss-hit corner somehow found its way through to Ellis who seemed surprised as anyone when his left-footed stab found the net with the keeper and defenders on the line nowhere to be seen.

Westcott was finding space in the hole between defence and midfield and his curling effort was well saved by the keeper.

The young Hawks side then had their best spell of the game and Kerton had to make a smart save at his near post to deny their midfielder and they also smashed a long-range free-kick over the bar.

Prime were generally comfortable though with the back 4 all performing well and generally leaving Kerton with little to do.

At the break The Numbers were reminded that they were now playing into the wind and the next goal would be crucial - it arrived within a couple of minutes of the restart.

Prime surged forward from the kick off and won a corner which was curled in to the 6-yard box and Williams was there to meet it with a thundering volley which flew into the net - giving the keeper no chance.

The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Hawks and Prime were now starting to pass the ball around with confidence, with Henshall to the fore.

Fitzgerald came on for Nowak on the hour mark with Ellis switched to left-back and Sykes allowed to push further forward down the wing.

The change paid dividends as Henshall and Westcott combined well before the latter threaded a ball inside the full-back for the rampaging Sykes who blasted a typically fierce delivery across the face of goal which Abu managed to divert in off the underside of the bar.

Prime chances kept coming as Turvey fired over from close range and then Henshall seemed set for a deserved goal but he placed his side-footed finish a yard wide of the post.

Hawkenbury kept battling and their best effort came with 10 minutes left as their midfielder fizzed a shot from the edge of the box against Kerton's post, but Williams was again there to clear the rebound.

Davis and Harris had by now replaced Sander and Westcott and Harris had time to see a well-struck volley blocked by the defender when it looked goal-bound.

The closing stages offered few other chances but at full-time it was a satisfying win for the home side against spirited opponents who never gave up and will take points off other teams this season.

It was also a nice chance to play a game which was well refereed and played in a good spirit throughout.
