Ashton Prime 0-4 Leigh

Saturday 2nd November 2013, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Following a week of steady rain, it was somewhat of a surprise that the Cadogan pitch survived the morning pitch inspection - unlike all other council-owned pitches in Tunbridge Wells.

It meant that two sides with identical records at the start of play both had the chance to move up to 2nd in the table.

For Prime - Sykes, Davis, Westcott and Nowak were all absent from last week's squad. Excell and Fitzgerald came into the starting line-up along with Skovborg-Hansen who started down the left-wing after re-signing for the club in midweek. Goldsmith and Buckland made up a two-man bench.

Leigh started well with their tall defenders in commanding form both in the air and on the floor as Ferguson and Excell struggled to get into the game.

Prime's defence was under much more pressure and they had to rely on Kerton to make a couple of smart saves to keep the scores level.

But eventually Prime succumbed when an intricate passing move cut their defence open and their midfielder slotted the ball passed Kerton.

It was soon 2-0 as a fine reverse pass on the edge of the Prime box put their striker clean through and he made no mistake.

The Numbers seemed to find their feet in the last 15 minutes of the half with Skovborg-Hansen making a couple of surging runs down the left - one of these resulted in the keeper making a fine plunging saving as Ferguson seemed set for a tap in.

Henshall had a largely frustrating half down the right but he was still Prime's most dangerous outlet and he got to the by-line several times only for his final pass to be cut out.

It remained 2-0 at the break and the players didn't need Goldsmith to tell them that they were allowing Leigh's central midfielders far too much time and space and there was a lack of challenges going in.

The second half started much more evenly with Prime upping the tempo and Abu seemingly everywhere. Leigh were still dangerous on the break though and Turvey's superb last-ditch challenge denied their pacy striker.

Ferguson came closest to finding a breakthrough for the hosts as he held off several challenges and got his shot away but it was deflected behind for a corner.

Shortly afterwards Goldsmith threw himself on for Excell to give Prime more of an aerial threat and he immediately got on the end of Abu's corner but couldn't quite direct it goalwards.

With 20 minutes left the game was killed as a contest as Leigh added a controversial 3rd goal. The ref rightly awarded them a free-kick about 25 yards out in a central position. But with Kerton lining up his wall, Leigh took the kick quickly and Kerton couldn't scramble across his goal in time to keep it out.

The fact that the ref didn't blow his whistle didn't seem to be an issue for him despite Prime protests.

Prime had by now lost their shape and their discipline with Goldsmith and Ellis in particular throwing themselves in for some rugged challenges and all it meant was that Leigh were given several free-kicks and the chance to kill the game off.

They added a 4th goal after Buckland had replaced Sander at right-back and the new linesman failed to spot that the ball had rolled out of play by roughly a mile** and Leigh went on to attack down the right and roll home another goal.

It was a result which the visitors thoroughly deserved and left Prime with a lot of thinking to do ahead of their trip to Paddock Wood in two week's time.

** slight exaggeration!
